Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a proprietary protocol developed by Microsoft, which provides a user with a graphical interface to connect to another computer over a network connection.

Remote Desktop is not enabled by default. You must specifically enable it to allow remote access to the workstation. When it is enabled, any member of the Administrators group can connect to the workstation. Other users must be placed on a remote access list to gain access to the workstation.

To enable RDP on a Window 7 machine, perform the following:

  1. Left click on the start button
  2. Hover over computer, right click and select properties
  3. On the System page, click Remote Settings in the left pane. This opens the System Properties dialog box to the Remote tab.
  4. From this System Properties window you can enable remote desktop connections
